I don't think Kariya and Brind'amour were playing NCAA at 17. Opps I screwed up there you are right. Kariya - born in 1974 played Jr A in 1990 & 1991 which equals 16 & 17. I probably messed up the others ones by a year too.

Tom Barrasso from High School straight to NHL...
Not that he ever was much of an all star but, he made quite the jump.

There were a couple of guys who did that around the same time as Barasso, I am thinking Phil Houseley and Brian Lawton ... either the NHL was a lot weaker then than now, or US high school hockey used to be much stronger.

Brian Lawton - worst first overall NHL pick... EVER

worse than Doug Wickenheiser or Patrik Stefan?? You forgot Alexandre Daigle - although given a supporting role Daigle is a good player.

and you forgot Bryan Berard, Joe Murphy and Chris Phillips (most boring first pick overall since Rick Green)

Tough to say who the clear cut worst #1 is - but Lawton is certainly among the contenders.

And I wouldn't rank Murphy that low, he had some productive years; 7 20 goal seasons, 2 30 goal seasons. I agree about Phillips.
