They have changed the system since Crosby got picked first overall.

Pretty sure they got Richards by pulling another stunt. He pretended he wanted to head to the US to play college but instead Rimouski drafted him after he was passed over by numerous teams and he reported.

There should be a rule in place that if a player states they are going the college route or will not report if drafted then the player is ineligible for the draft that year.

There should be a rule in place that if a player states they are going the college route or will not report if drafted then the player is ineligible for the draft that year. I totally agree with that, have a rule in place that say, within two days of the draft if your intentions are to go the college route or you will not report it is submitted to the Q. You can't have the date too much earlier than that, because a player who initially decides to not report, etc, may change their mind. Maybe some sort of rule like that already exists? I just am not savvy about all the Q rules is all

What if a kid says he'll play in the Q ... but then doesn't report and goes and plays NCAA ? Its pretty tough for a kid at 15 (and his parents) to decide what he is going to do for his next 5 years. Some just aren't ready to make that decision. And some don't know if they will have a shot at an NCAA team.

Is Esposito had told Saint John that he would play in the Q just not in Saint John, I bet the Sea Dogs would have drafted him anyway. It's not ideal, but it's better than the current system.

so if a kid says he will play in the q and does not report because he gets drafted by a team he doesnt like so be it at least they would get something if they traded him.right now the kids are playing the system.

i've made this suggestion before that you can have the draft as usual - pick whoever you want. then when training camp starts, designate a certian date that any player that doesn't report to their teams camp becomes some sort of restricted free agent. so any team is capable of talking to and signing that player, and if they do then the team that originally owned his rights is given some sort of compensation in the form of draft picks or whatever. the compensation price would have to be steep enough to put a nick in the new teams future, but not too much as too discourage it from happening cause you still want these guys playing in the league over NCAA or wherever.
using this method theoretically saint john could have taken espo first overall, quebec could sign him when he doesn't report, then the dogs get a couple of first rounders from quebec (or somn like that). quebec gets what they want, albeit for a price, the player gets what he wants, and saint john is well compensated.

Just my opinion... but I don't think a system like that would work Chootoi.
If someone doesn't want to go to a team like Saint John... and then they get a couple of picks in return... what happens when the players they draft with those picks don't want to go either? More picks?
Picks are no good if no one will report! You might end up with a system where all the players decide to go to the powerhouse teams... and the weak ones would stay weak.
I agree the current system is not perfect, and Espo this year is an example of that. But it's what we work with now.
Don't forget that the Cats ended up getting Yandle after he wouldn't report to the team that drafted him. They only gave up a 5th round pick to get him when he didn't want to go to Gatineau.
The draw of the memorial cup and the opportunity to play under Nolan convinced him to come.

yeah i'm not saying my system is foolproof, cause there's flaws in every system. i don't know what the solution to that would be, maybe a rule that a team can only have X number of first round picks on their team? similar to the 20yo rule? i dunno...
