Wildcats unsure of draft strategy
NEIL HODGE Times & Transcript Staff
The Moncton Wildcats find themselves in a tricky situation entering the 2005 Canadian Hockey League European draft today.
...
The Wildcats can't simply delete Bartulis or Karsums from their roster at this stage. The deadline to do that was Monday at 5 p.m.
"Karsums is definitely coming back next season," said Moncton head coach and director of hockey operations Ted Nolan. "Bartulis is working out with the Central Red Army Team in Russia and there might be a possibility he could stay there. We'll talk to his agent again to find out his situation.
"There could be a slight possibility that we might have to pick another player in the European draft, but we're probably going to wait until the midnight hour on that one. We can't delete Bartulis from our roster at this point. We would have to trade his rights." www.canadaeast.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050629/TTSPORTS03/206290445/-1/TTSPORTSWow... that would be a big loss for the WC! This could explain on why they went after a couple defensemen (BĂ©langer, Yandle) and kept their depth D's.

At this time the draft is running about 15 minutes ahead of schedule. The 9:30 pick has already been made.

Was ranked 11th among European skaters for this years draft.. 6'5 so good size.. probably has some chemistry with Truhkno
again nobody really expected 50 goals.... but on paper it appears we did in fact land an IMPACT EURO

With the Cats sparing no expense for next season in order to be a contender at the Memorial Cup, and with the foreshadowing in today's paper re: Bartulis possibly not returning, what are the odds that the team may have lined up a deal to make a big splash at the Euro draft and select a player like Michael Frolik or Anze Kopitar?

Those players are going to play Pro hockey in Europe next year, would be a wasted pick.

Maybe they'll pick one and hold on to him for us.

Maybe they'll pick one and hold on to him for us. Being an expansion team, I think Saint John will try to draft 2 decent euros to build their offence around them.
