Might be that Marcus Watson kid we had in here a few months back for a visit ... from San Jose I believe ... scoring at an astonishing pace in some mediocre high school league ... or something like that. Good call. Just got the following Media Release: January 10th, 2007 For Immediate Release Moncton, NB – The Moncton Wildcats have signed 17 year old Free Agent Marcus Watson today. Watson played this year for the San Jose Jr. Sharks of the California Midget AAA League. Les Wildcats de Moncton ont signé le joueur agent libre de 17 ans Marcus Watson aujourd’hui. Watson a joué pour les Sharks Jr. de San Jose dans la ligue Midget AAA de la Californie It's worth a look, being 17, even if he is rough around the edges, they'll have time to work with him.

Strange, he was promised a roster spot on this team for 2006-2007 but is not on the roster. Was he cut?

+251, no wonder the kid is moving on, 150 goals and 151 assists is damage enough. Sounds like he has a great work ethic for a 17 year old. You wonder about previous level of play but someone has obviously done some home work. We'll see soon enough.

I like this signing. The kid obviously has an offensive flair. How well that will translate to the Q game is another matter, but at least we know he knows what to do with the puck.
Also, I love the fact that he's only 17. If he pans out, it could be one heck of a duo with Cameron. Our team is starting to look real good for the next couple of years.

Let him play with Nathan (I think I am Bobby Orr) Welton for awhile and that will bring his +/- down to earth.
Sounds like a great addition to our team though, welcome to Moncton.

Will be interesting to see how he will adapt to the "Q", hopefully he's another diamond in the rough like Mangan.

I overheard someone talking about our newest FA and they mentioned that his stats don't mean a thing because Midget AAA in CA is terrible...well I'm not sure they have watched many teams from the US. I remember a Pee Wee AA team from Atlanta that smoked everyone at the SEDHMA tournament in Halifax last year. The point is you can't assume it's bush league. Hockey has moved south... and west. I have a relative who has season tickets to the Sharks, he also played junior hockey when he was younger and he has commented that the area is starting to produce some decent hockey players ( where do you think the kids of the NHL players go to play hockey?) I'll ask him if he's heard of this guy. I wouldn't write off anyone just because they play in a league that is unfamiliar to us.
As long as his name isn't Jack, a monkey from CA, it's worth the tryout.

You must be miserable, you will have to endure him for a few more months. Hopefully after this year you will disappear with him. Unlike Welton's contribution to the team, your contribution to this board will not be missed. This is a real pet peeve of mine on the boards, not only this one. Posters who only show up to call down one player in particular in every post they make.

I'm not going to get overly excited about this signing just yet. But at the same time there is definitely no harm in giving him a try and seeing what happens. No matter how poor that league is, with numbers like that he MUST have some offensive talent. Good enough for the Q? We'll find out...

I'll ask him if he's heard of this guy. I wouldn't write off anyone just because they play in a league that is unfamiliar to us. As long as his name isn't Jack, a monkey from CA, it's worth the tryout. Here is my "FBI Profiler" look at this kid ... Probably on the small side (I didn't check) ... his high goal count would suggest that not only is a gifted sniper but also probably very fast ... perhaps lightening fast. His high assist count suggests that he has played with skilled players (somebody had to bury 151 goals) ... but it also suggests that he is a gifted playmaker. This kid was clearly playing at the wrong level to put up numbers like this ... I would expect that the game became boring for him potting 5 to 10 pts per game ... as it doesn't seem that he was really challenged. Now this kid isn't really on anybody's radar as being a superstar in the making ... info on him isn't exactly easy to find ... these are Crosby type numbers and Crosby was on the radar when he was 12. Maybe they know more about this kid out west ... but if he is as good as his numbers suggest then why isn't he in the WHL or at least on the radar ? He is 17 and so this is his draft year ... if he isn't already on the radar then there is probably a good reason. I agree with your comment regarding the quality of hockey played in the US ... I've seen the same thing you refer to on several occasions. On the other side I've also seen US teams come to local tournaments and get their asses handed to them ... but usually at the lower levels. US teams don't normally travel too far away unless they are strong and looking for better competition. I also noticed that he was "tendered" (what exactly does that mean ?) by Eugene Jr A when I went to look him up earlier this morning, but does not appear on their roster for 06-07 ... wondered why and wondered where he was playing now. Eugene is in Oregon which is getting up close to the Canadian border, and probably not a stranger to playing against some BC Jr A teams ... a very strong brand of Jr hockey. Maybe he showed up to Eugene and got cut .. if so ... game over for Marcus. The Cats had him here earlier in the season for a visit ... he was apparently at the autograph table signing autographs with other scratched players. I expect that on that visit he skated with the Cats in practice to see how he looked. Perhaps they made an offer to him then that wasn't to his liking ... but have now sweetened the pot. Or ... perhaps they made no offer then ... but now thought they'd give him a shot. I don't know ... just speculating ... I'll be curious to see how close I come with my blind "line on an internet article" assessment.
