If I recall correctly, Wesley Welcher was not classified by the Q Central Scouting Bureau as a first-rounder. Yet, that's where Moncton thought he belonged. What did our scouting staff see that the others didn't? The Cats have already defied the QCSB for instance in the very first year of its history by choosing Pierre Dagenais as the first overall pick, whereas the Bureau had him classified #10, especially because of his questionable attitude. He had to be sent home midway in the second season. Let's hope Welcher will live up to the description offered by Peter Nevin as a justification for making him our first choice.

The fact that he was rated lower by the Q scouts means nothing. The Q CSR list is usually never ery accurate outside of the top 3 or 4 players. Welcher was ranked 19th and was picked 14th, not like he was an off the wall shocking pick who was ranked in round 6-8 or something.

Scouts are usually more attentive when it comes to those who should be the most dominant candidates. In the case of Welcher, perhaps he was given less attention because scouts had less occasions to see him perform, given the distance factor. Yet Newfoundland has given us good players over these past years. We better not ignore what that province has to offer.
