Something I wasn't aware of...
Basically, it says that with the new CBA, NHL teams have 5 years to bring them into their system instead of 2 years for Canadians and Euros. They can basically protect their players longer.

They can basically protect their players longer. That would have a bit of an impact on the 5th to 7th rounds...not so much in the first 3-4 where you just take the player(s) you like. In the early 80's Montreal would draft a pile of US high school guys late because they could wait 3-4 years to see them develop before deciding if they wanted to offer them a contract...some of them came through and were part of the 86 cup winner(Maley Rooney Kurvers Hill etc).

I think it's also more likely to occur in weaker drafts and this wasn't a particulalrly strong year. Another phenomenon occurring in the US is more and more NCAA players are passing up the final year or two of eligibility to go to the NHL. This really has to make the NCAA attractive to the NHL: Postpone decisions on some kids for as much as five years or until they're 23 or so and pick up the talent as soon as it's ready.
