Not really the same...Saunders is 20 and Bourque is 19, plus Bourque does not have a contract signed yet. It doesn't matter if Saunders has a contract or not, if they feel he is not quite ready for NHL/AHL, and he would develop better with a memorial cup experience instead of the ECHL, they will send him back to Moncton. If they felt that way, they probably wouldn't have signed him. Signed 20 year olds very rarely play junior.

if they did not sign him i think they would lose him in the draft and another team could pick him up.. that why they sign him... ;D ;D

The only scenario I can think of in which Saunders and/or Bernier (doubtful on Bernier) could be here this year is if Irving is paying the first year of their contract (AHL). Anaheim and SJ might be happy to sign these two up to hold onto their rights if somebody else was signing the cheques. It essentially gives the two teams another year before they have to start paying them. However, I think Bernier is SJ's top prospect and they'd likely rather get him right into the pros ... so I doubt they'd play that game with him.

I am pretty sure Bernier is not San Jose's top prospect
one of them for sure but I think Milan Michalek for starters is certainly ahead of Steve B on that list
question: if they did send their signed players to play in junior.. do teams actually use up a year of the pro contract? if not i don't see what you are talking about re: Irving paying the first year of their contract

at hockeysfuture.com, they have bernier listed as the sharks 5th best prospect: www.hockeysfuture.com/team/san_jose_sharks1. Milan Michalek, LW 2. Christian Ehrhoff, D 3. Marcel Goc, C 4. Matt Carle, D 5. Steve Bernier, RW and with that list it's hard to argue. at least the top 3 are pretty near NHL ready right now. bernier has a couple years development still.

If they didn't think he was ready for the pros after 4 years of junior, they would have let him go back in the draft. Why sign him if after 4 years he still isn't ready to move up a level?
