Lets compare Pronger and Brewer
Pronger 30 years old
Brewer 26 years old
last NHL season (2003-2004):
Pronger: 80gp 14 goals 40 assists 54 pts -1
Brewer: 77pg 7 goals 18 assists 25 pts -6
Why I think its a good deal for Edmonton; Pronger had twice as productive offensively than Eric. He signed a five year deal.
Once Brewer's contract comes up, he will cost more for the current time he would've been with Edmondton + his new contract than what Pronger will cost them for the next 5 years. Plus Brewer will be UFA and you risk of losing him for nothing.
We all know that Eric Brewer has the pottentail of being a top 10 dman in the league. With the new CBA he will be eligible for Free Agency in 2 seasons, or 3.
With that said, it gives the Oilers more opportunity to get key guys now and in the future, since they now know what Their top dman is going to cost them for 5 years. With Eric if they could've signed when he becomes a free agent, how much would he cost them? If he plays at the level pronger is now, you can bet that at 28 years old he will be worth more than what Pronger is making now.
Injuries have haunted Pronger in the past. Injuries can happen to everyone, its unpredictable. Pronger is 100% healthy right now, thus no reason to speculate that it will affect his level of play, it sure didn't in 03-04.
Its a good deal for Edmonton in my opinion skill wise and financially. No doubt in my mind.

I'm hoping the Penguins sign Tie Domi, who can fight with the best of them and who has proved he can play too when given the chance. Leafs have re-signed Tie Domi, oh well can't go wrong with either the Penguins or the Leafs
