Just for anyone who is interested, it has been posted on the Moosehead's board that Bodnarchuck has been confirmed and that Halifax has scheduled a press conference for this afternoon to officially announce it.

Oh thats the last straw! I'm not going to support the Cats anymore with their inept management, couldn't even get this guy from Halifax to report up the road... blah blah blah.... That'd be Goons response to this news.

The Cats will look bad for protecting Adam and Bernier ahead of him.

I don't necessarily consider this a poor move on Moncton Management's part as they had a lot of very difficult descions to make and Bodnarchuck made it clear he didn't want to play in Moncton.
What I do consider this as is a perfect example of this increasing trend of players dictating which teams that they will play for. This year you had Esposito choosing Quebec, Caron choosing Saint John, and to a lesser extent Lund refusing to report to some teams, Bourret wanting out of Lewiston as well as a few other examples. I know that this has always happened but it appears to be an increasing trend which I predict will continue to grow as more and more players get away with it.
I really think this is something that the league needs to get a handle on before it gets out of control. Because it is really unfair to the teams who lose these players and really reduces the competitive balance of the league.

agreed. what would look worse - protecting a guy who says he'll never play for you and lose maybe bernier (who still MAY be back), or protect bernier and lose the guy who wasn't going to suit up for you anyways.
myself, i prefer the latter. this doesn't look bad on the WC's at all - it's called protecting your ass. they couldn't win in this situation. protect him and lose another key guy, or don't protect him and risk losing him. if anything it looks bad on the player side IMO.

if a player turns around and says he's going the us college route for education reasons...the turns around in a year or 2 decides he'll play in the q he should as long as he plays for the team that drafted him...as for Esposito i think what he did was uncalled for and not be allowed to play major junior that was kinda of dirty

You really should get something for that cough before it gets worse.

As mad/disappointed as we are at this situation, we could not have protected this guy if his flatly refused to play here. It's always a complicated and unfair situation when there is an expansion draft. Teams don't see this coming when they are building up for future years with prospects that would definitely play here and the few players we draft who may or may not, but seems worth the risk to choose them. Then, after all of this scouting, trading, scheming if you will, the league adds two new teams and more than half the work you have put into selecting players is for not. Without the expansion draft, we could have held the rights to this guy and possibly made the same trade with Halifax as St John did. Want to point blame for this situation, first, the ever-unfair expansion draft, second, league rules pertaining to these supposedly college bound players, third, the NHL lockout, because everyone will blame it for everything for the next 100 years. However, the Cats are not to blame in this situation. PS, I wonder if having 5 - 20 year olds would have made for a much different Moncton Alpines?

At least the player is being up front about it. Apparently the GMs are meeting about this issue next week. www.hfxnews.com/index.cfm?sid=472&sc=3

Hmm... if you listen to what Patenaude has to say, then why bother with a draft. Just let all the players decide where they want to play. This would result in a great league!

He's an idiot....it's no problem to see that he is from a big market team. Well he is and he isnt... a player at age 15 should be able to weight his options. I know players shouldnt be able to pick where they will play, but the REALITY of it is if a player gets picked by a team LIKE RN or Chic etc, somewhere they do not want to go, then they can choose NOT to, and play in an english US college town and still get the NHL and pro-hockey. It is very much like forcing a young teenager to play somewhere where they may be miserable. Sure, NHL players/picks dont have much choice at times, but its VERY different. Living an NHL lifestyle in a major city, no matter where, is a good life. Living as an english 15 year old in a small northern quebec town might be very hard do for some. But the best point he makes is that if some of these guys DIDNT pull the NCAA routine then we wouldnt have them in our league at all, because its not a LIE about the NCAA, they are probably very much heading that way if the wrong team picks them. I'd like to see everyone get drafted wherever, and then report. But it wont happen. I think if they have to declare in advance their intention, you will see ALOT more american and english (atlantic) player not risking a RN/VD team, and going NCAA for sure, no chance of the Q.

I always maintain that every kid has the right to decide where he wants to play ... in the Q or NCAA ... or other. If he gets drafted by a team that doesn't interest him then he has every right to exercise his other options if he has them. I never fault a kid for choosing education first ... hockey second.
But ... it will ruin the league if the players are allowed to pick which teams they will play for ... and which they won't. The small market teams and remote teams will die quickly and the Q will become a 10 team league.
Some system must be put in place that is fair to all teams ... many suggestions have come out on the boards that have good and bad sides to them ... but they are all better than what is in place now ... nothing.
I agree we may not have these kids at all if we don't allow them to pick the teams they will report to ... but if its only Halifax and Quebec then that is a huge problem. Its no good for the League if these kids will only report to the deep pocket teams ... and so I'd rather we didn't have them at all if that is the case.
It needs to be fixed ... hopefully some good ideas will come from the GM meetings.

I put myself in the place of the parents of some of these kids - if my son, an anglophone 15yo, gets drafted by R-N or V-D, he will have the opportunity to learn French, yes, but I would think there would be reduced opportunities for education, or at least additional challenges with trying to continue schooling in English. I know this year Crosby did his education through Harrison Trimble while playing for Rimouski - do all teams have arrangements like that for anglophone players?
