Is the deadline for NHL teams to sign their 03 draft picks, we should have a better idea on the status of Saunders and Bernier after this day.

If they are unsigned on the 28th they go back in the draft and could be drafted again by another team so we won't know the whole story. a new team would be more likely to let the player come back for the Memorial Cup and sign them in June though...

If they go unsigned and redrafted to a new team, that new team can send them back to junior and not worry about a year of contract wasted. It'd be best scenario IMO for Moncton.

I can see that happening with Saunders ... but I'd be shocked if Bernier wasn't signed by San Jose.

I don't know especially this year not signing draft picks will be for players who turn out to be complete busts which I don't consider either Saunders or Bernier to be.
Both are ranked pretty well on their respective organizations depth charts (www.hockeysfuture.com) and IMO are both ready for at least the AHL. But that will be ANH & SJ's decision. Regarldess of where they end up I expect that both players will be signed no problem.
Also I think this new CBA and salary cap will have a big impact on teams resulting in about 2 or 3 extra prospects possibly making teams when they normally wouldn't because teams don't have cap space to go out and sign anymore free agents.
ANH already has 20M committed to 9 players and SJ has 13.5M committed to 10 players. Meaning that right now there is lots of available roster spots will only limited cap room.
Should be interesting. ;D

I think it will take the league a few years for it all to settle out before typical trends are established again ... right now its just not very predictable. And each team will be different this year ... some teams that have alot of payroll room will look to add affordable FA's ... while others with very little wiggle room will add rookies.

Actually, if they are signed and sent back to junior anyway, it still doesn't 'waste' a year of their contract. They actually have to play pro-hockey to use up a year of contract. That's why it's always big news every year when a borderline junior aged NHL player plays his 10th NHL game.

Both Bernier and Saunders are 20 yr olds the new Minimum age requirement has no direct impact on them!

ya i wasn't referring to them specifically, i meant in the future more players will have to play junior at 18-19 than go to the AHL or ECHL. but you're right the younger, talented 20-21 year old prospects will now have a better shot at making their clubs. however; i still don't see alot of guys making the NHL in their draft year at 19. cheap or not, the far majority aren't ready for the NHL at 19. i think you'll see the AHL development time cut down to a year or two though, rather than the 2-4 it is now.

i meant already drafted 19year olds. lol... i need to start choosing my words carefully NO what Mike was saying it doesn't matter if the player is drafted or not. All 18 or 19 yr old players aren't allowed to move from the CHL to the AHL/ECHL. If they are good enough to make the NHL they go but if not their only option is the CHL. This year was kind of an exception to that rule.
