What I don't get is why he would wait until the end of July to have surgery ... it is not a new injury... why not do it sooner so as to ensure a complete recovery in time for the beginning of the season?

Saunders should get signed on the weekend and will be attending the Portland Pirates conditioning camp www.portlandpirates.com/newsarticle.asp?Id=889IMHO Saunders stand a good chance to stick to Portland next season... He is THE physical defenseman in the Anaheim organization and is ready for AHL...

Don't really disagree with you, but I don't see that he will be signed anywhere in the article you linked... and if he is not signed by Friday, he re-enters the draft..

Also, where does it mention him signing? Its just a list of prospects scheduled to show up.

It is OK to be on the optimistic side for your team, but....I was hoping to read a little bit of hope also that Saunders get signed for his own good If we rely on some Ducks' fans on HF, he will be instrumental to the rebuilding of the Ducks' future D and fans do expect him to get signed.....Hard to not see his future in Portland if that is the case... hfboards.com/showthread.php?p=3145935#post3145935

I thought if he doesn't sign, he automatically goes into the draft. That is my understanding as well... a player only becomes a UFA after being passed over in the draft the second time... If you think about it, why would anyone opt in to the draft a second time - why not just become a UFA and make a deal with a team of your choice? It must be mandatory...

Actually, not everyone goes back in a second time. Players who were drafted after their 18 year old season (like Crawford, Graham, and others with late b-days) do become UFA if they are not signed.
