Scoring goals wasn't a problem two years ago, though. You can keep a Hepditch in a 20 yo role when you're scoring 5 goals a game anyway. I agree with that point but we are not a contender this year, so a guy who will show the young players the importance of going all out every shift of every game has his role. The Cats need that type of leadership even more so than on a powerhouse team.

I'm not disputing that he has on-ice value, it's just that we need more productivity out of our limited number of 20 yo slots. I think Gaudet was an exception, and I don't put Morehouse in quite the same category. Having a 20 yo who doesn't play on special teams is a liability (Gaudet was a solid PK guy and could win faceoffs). As for being captain, I can see Morehouse in that role, but he'll need to cut down on the undisciplined penalties. Point taken, though, there aren't a lot of returning players who could fill the role of captain like Morehouse can. Morehouse is a regular on PK ... and he tends to draw as many penalties as he takes himself .. but a little more discipline wouldn't hurt ... if he was perfect we wouldn't be having this conversation. Morehouse surprised me how many goals he scored in the first real season where he was a regular player ... 15 goals in his second year is one short of what Gaudet got in his 4th year ... and 20 out of him wouldn't be a stretch. Morehouse also scored a few beauties ... a few breakaway goals brought me to my feet. If I'm picking 20 YO's ... I go with Marquardt, Morehouse, Emanuele ... probably not the most popular trio on here ... but we have an abundance of young skilled forwards and Mangan and Lincourt will just take away ice time from yonger players ... and we need a little more reliability on D. Mangan and Lincourt will both have trade value while Emanuele and Morehouse probably very little ... and will have more value to the team if we keep them.

Why did we trade for him? I've scratched my head on that one since he arrived. I've seen him score some nice goals here and in Halifax however.

I think to some extent it may play out in camp in large part based on how some of our non-20's develop over the summer. If guys like Labelle, Cameron, and Eagles show they are ready to play a scoring role, it may make Mangan and Lincourt expendable. Another factor would be the new euros and whether or not we get a high impact forward out of either those picks, or Hayes reporting. As for Emmanuele, his chances of making the team may well hinge on how well Goyens, Ouskun, Tolles play in camp ... if they look like solid vets, then Emmanuele probably isn't worth a 20 y/o spot ... if they look like they did most of last season, and Emmanuele has a good camp, he will quite likely be on the team.

If nothing is added to the defense corps before the season starts, then I could see keeping Emanuele (pretty much out of necessity).
I guess the biggest factor in clearing the logjam of 20 yo's may simply be which ones are most marketable to other teams.

I think Lincourt was brought in to add to offense when Samson went out ... but his defensive play was so bad that they wasted the regular season getting him up to speed to be a productive player. He had a good playoff ... was one of our better players ... but it was a case of too little too late I think. His work ethic just doesn't make him a good 20 yr old in my eyes. They overpaid for Lincourt in that respect ... overpaid on Goyens too IMO.

I hear they are bringing a few FA's on defense...that could play a big role. Obviously the 2 Euros drafted will also be a factor.
It's not a bad plan to keep all 6 20's unless the market dries up from the draft to August.
In terms of trade value...
A guy like Marquardt is probably worth at least a 2nd, he could score 45-50 with good linemates and can domiante when he's on.
Mangan Should be worth a 3rd.
The others...best case a 4th or 5th...worst case nothing...Sniderman(1987 goalie market is flooded)...Emanuele(depends if he plays like the playoff version or reg season version)....Lincourt(lots of skill questionable desire). Morehouse(prob has more value to the team than in a trade).

I think Emanuele will show up and have a good camp. He's a smart player, he knows he is by no means guaranteed a spot on the team (whether with the Cats or someone else).
We also forget he only has about one full season of Q experience...I wouldn't be surprised to see him be a very steady, physical player this year.
