This trade is potentially a very good deal for the Wildcats. It will all depend on how those picks are used, especially the Euro pick. Yeah I agree. If they can get a good 1988 or 1989 d-man, then they gain a lot by the trade. They can really use the 2nd rounder. If you trade bartulis at midseason, you end up short 1 Euro for half the year...or just have a low end "filler". This is a good deal for the Cats. CAP filled a need but the Cats optimized an asset bigtime.

Especially considering they will have Welton A.Mac as 20's plus Bourdon probably back...they would be better off with a 1989 or 1988 Euro d-man. I think CB made out pretty good also, they are closer to being a contender with Bartulis than with a rookie. He becomes their #1 or 2 d-man.

Got htis off HF boards: Martikainen is a small, creative playmaker. He possesses soft hands, a quick shot, and good vision of the ice. In order to improve on last year’s 6th place finish, Team Finland will be counting on him to be their offensive catslyst. hockeysfuture.com/article.php?sid=8133&mode=threaded&order=0

We need to rebuild, with several veteran d-men already i don't think Bart would've helped us any.We need several young guys in right away in order to shorten our rebuilding process. Keeping guys like A.Mac,Bourdon,Welton,Bartulis doesn't leave much room for youngsters.

According to the Q site ... players cannot be traded at this time as it is not a recognized trading period ... only during the Midget draft in June ... August .. and Dec/Jan can players be traded ... with the exception of 20 yr olds. However ... the Wildcats did get credit for drafting 34th ... so somehow we were able to make room. perhaps the rules are poorly written as it would seem this violates them ... but obviously the Q OK'd the deal.

The fact that we picked a Finnish player means there shouldn't be much trouble when it comes to work ethic. The Finns are becoming known for playing a hard working, physical "Canadian" style of game these days. At worst we picked up a good 3rd line player for this season who could develop into something more in the future. I just hope fans expectations will be realistic for a 17 year old coming over to a new country and culture.
