This morning's T&T mentions Rick Bowness and Andy Murray as potential candidates for the Cats post. From previous comments, it appears RKI is leaning towards hiring someone with NHL head coaching experience. But is that really the right route to take? Consider the following:
- it appears the main reason they want an NHL guy is due to the tremendously positive experience working with Ted Nolan this past season. But Nolan was an elite coach at both the junior and NHL levels - would just anyone with an NHL background come in and be so impressive? Perhaps not...
- there is always a risk in hiring an NHL guy that we could lose him to the first NHL opportunity that comes along. A guy like Murray sounds great, but we could be back in the same situation in a year's time if he gets another crack at the NHL (or worse yet, mid-season), given that we are now building 2 or 3 years down the road, what are the odds of landing an NHL-calibre coach and keeping him until our team matures? Perhaps a guy like Bowness would commit long term given that he is a Maritimer and may be at a point in his life where he is ready to retire from the hustle of the NHL.

One big area of concern with a former NHL guy is that he wouldn't have the down to earth disposition that Nolan had. It's not everybody that comes from the NHL that can step in and coach 16-19 year old kids and be able to relate to them and get the most out of them. If the guy comes in with a Larue-like "my way or the highway" attitude, he won't get the most out of his kids like Nolan did.

I think we should just start some more ugly rumours about Nolan and get him fired.

Andy Murray would be a good candidates because of his nhl expirence and before he coached in the nhl he was coaching prep school hockey. He should be good working with young players.

I totally agree with that - my concern would be that he would jump at the first NHL offer (who would blame him, much bigger money, more exposure) that came along and leave the Cats in the lurch in a year's time.

I think NHL teams might stay away from him more then other top coaches because he wasn't really successful at that level such as Ted Nolan was.

What about Lacroix, any talk of him being a candidate? What was his role on the coaching staff last year (ie did he work the practices, watched games from upstairs/bench coach)? I am sure he must have learned a thing or 2 from Nolan and Flynn during this past year. Any chanches of him being the bench boss?

Take a look at his career record, he is 30 games over .500 in 5 years as an NHL head coach - I have seen coaches with much worse records get recycled for second and third chances - why not Murray?

Supposedly the Journal de Montreal reported today that Marc Habscheid and Andy Murray are the two leading candidates... I would think Habscheid's next step would be the NHL at some level, coaching or assistant... and Andy Murray? Going straight from the NHL to the QMJHL and a rebuilding team at that? These names make sense with the attraction of a mem cup team, but I dont see why either guy would be interested in a shitty QMJHL team coaching job.

Apparently, the CHL found Moncton did such a great job of hosting the Memorial Cup that they decided to grant us the tournament for the next 3 years. --- Posted with editorial assistance from Fred the Moose.
