MacDonald makes major move Top defenceman picks Q-league's Wildcats over U.S. college ranks
By Joey Smith | Truro Daily News Truro Andrew MacDonald has chosen major junior and a chance to play for the Memorial Cup over the Truro Bearcats and the NCAA.
MacDonald informed Bearcats coach and general manager Shawn Evans on Tuesday that he has decided to play hockey this season for the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec major junior league.
MacDonald, a slick-skating defenceman, played the past two seasons for the Bearcats. At the completion of last year, he agreed verbally to a scholarship offer from Bimidji State University (NCAA, Division 1). He had planned to play in Truro this season and begin his college career in 2006.
That changed, however, when the Wildcats invited the Judique, Cape Breton native to their training camp, where he played well enough to earn a spot on the team. He contemplated the jump to major junior for about a week and made his decision yesterday.
"He made a decision that he thought was best for his hockey career. I understand that," said Evans. "I'm very disappointed on a personal level.

Why would we have to call Truro to get this player ... it has nothing to do with them. If we were a JR A franchise in some other league I can see his point ... but we aren't ... we are a team at a higher level. Does he try to hold all of his players back from playing at a higher level ? Does he not think that a University education in Canada is worth anything ? Where the hell is Bemidgi State ? I hope Evans called Hawkesbury before stealing away their player ... If we called Evans and said to him ... "we'd like permission to talk to MacDonald and bring him into camp" ... what right does Evans have to have any sort of say in the kids future. If Evans said "no" ... do we stop trying ? Evans has the right to dictate where this kid can and can't play in Jr A ... and thats all. What a friggin' whiner.

More or less Evans is just blowing steam because he just lost his number 1 defenseman.
His only issue is that your coaching staff contacted the player directly before going through the team. There really isn't anything that a Jr A coach can do to stop his player from moving up but as a common courtesy he should have been contacted first. Whether Evans agreed with Macdonald leaving of not was irrelevant.
As a side note to convince a kid to give up a scolarship normally a team would have to make some kind of commitments to him. Meaning I guessing he would have been guaranteed to dress at least so many games (possibly 50 or more??). Could this mean that Macdonald jumps up on the Depth chart possibly as a regular player ahead of others like Demers,Tuangay or Emanuele???

Common courtesy can often be misunderstood as power especially by a moron like that coach. They were calling him to inform him of their intent and that was all that was necessary.

There must have been more to the atricle than I read. It didn't seem from what I saw anyone was overly perplexed.
Steve wanted to know "Where the hell is Bemidgi State ?" Like 1/2 things hockey in the US it is in Minnesota. They are "The Beavers" and play a Division II schedule in all sports but hockey, where they play a Div I schedule.

Demers has been one of our best Dmen all camp and will take on a bigger role this year ... although we haven't seen much of Bartulis, Yandle and Belanger yet. MacDonald, Demers and Adam will likely share the 5/6 slots. One may also be traded at some point.

The Wildcats will give MacDonald a full scholarship to play this year and next. Then if he doesn't turn pro, he can play University hockey...probably at St. FX ;D ;D. I wonder who'll be the coach there in a couple of years???

I don't understand. If he stayed long enough in camp to earn a spot, he must have voided his NCAA eligibility. Or, did they make their decision about him after just one look?

He could have stayed longer at his own expense.
He played in Lewiston tonight so he is obviously staying and has relinquished his NCAA.
