I used to work with a guy who was about 6'4...worked out religiously about every 2nd day...drank protein shakes etc....very serious about his training.
The guy would have a hard time lifting an 80 pound box.....at the same time another guy who worked there was about 5'10 didn't work out and was pretty slim,yet the smaller guy could lift twice as much.....those farm boys are pretty damn strong for their size sometimes.

Bulk does not directly correlate with strength (bench press). A lot of bulked up guys can lift a lot less than you'd think, while some pretty lean, but fit guys can lift a surprisingly large amount. True enough, I guess what I meant was explosive strength might be more important to a hockey player than the max weight he can lift for 12-13 reps. What I am getting at is the fact that any one of these guys could probably increase their max bench for 12-13 reps if they focused more on that specific exercise...however when you have dozens of other things to work on such as core strength, endurance, flexibility, speed etc...you may be less likely to have time to train more on the bench. For example, I have seen a few conditioning programs where they call for only two sets of bench press twice a week as part of the overall conditioning program...pretty hard to work your way up in weight doing two sets rather than someone who follows a non-hockey specific weight training program and may do 4-6 sets ( or more) of bench press. I really think you shouldn't read that much into the amount they lifted. I think Hockey Canada has some interesting info on fitness testing for hockey players and they have data to suggest how much kids bench at that age. Out of interest I'll see if I can find the amount that's normal for the age group.

From the original post, the top guys are benching at least 3/4 of their body weight, which isn't bad for a teenager who doesn't focus on that particular exercise.
