Looking at the NYI draft picks on the weekend, they selected a number of players currently planning on playing NCAA next year. Given that Nolan is a big proponent of the CHL as a development league, maybe we could land one or more of these guys?
Doug Rogers: Doug Rogers has a strong, powerful skating stride. He scored 24 goals, 38 assists and 62 points with St. Sebastian's.
"Doug has good hockey sense and vision," said Islanders scout Jim Madigan. "He has good passing and shooting skills. We look forward to him further developing into a promising prospect."
Rogers is also an intelligent player with a good understanding of the game
No mention of where he will play next season, he is from Massachusetts and appears undrafted by the Q...
Jase Weslosky: Jase Weslosky played for Sherwood Park of the British Columbia League last season and will attend St. Cloud State in the fall of 2007.
"He is very quick and agile goaltender," said Islanders goalie coach Sudarshan Maharaj. "He is in the same mold as Marc-Andre Fleury, and should develop into a promising No. 1 netminder."
Alberta boy, I can't find record of his being drafted by the WHL, so perhaps a free agent?
Rhett Rakshani: Rakhshani played for the US National Developmental Program during the 2005-2006 season, tallying 18 goals, 23 assists and 41 points in 50 games.
The University of Denver prospect is a shifty and agile skater. He has a strong nose for the net. Rakhshani's skill and speed will bring excitement to the Coliseum crowd.
"Rhett is a skilled player with a great first couple of steps," said Islanders scout Brian Hunter. "He is real quick with the puck in tight areas, and sees the ice well. He'll be a joy to watch for Islanders fans."
Rakhshani is also known for setting the tone for his teammates with gritty play and a strong worth ethic.
He was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2003 WHL bantam draft, may still be on a protected list...
Shane Sims: "Shane is a smooth skating two-way defenseman with a good shot," said Isles scout Jay Heinbuck. "Sims was a steal for a fifth round pick."
Sims has one more year left with Des Moines of the USHL, after which he'll join Ohio State in the fall of 2007.
From NY, not sure if anyone in the OHL has his rights...
Brian Day: Brian Day played for prep school Governor Dummer last season and will play there for one more season before attending Colgate.
"We're happy to have grabbed Day so late," said Isles scout Jim Madigan. "He's a power-forward that drives to the net hard. He's an honest hard-worker who is strong in his own zone."
From Boston, appears to be a Q league free agent.
Troy Mattila: Troy Mattila put up impressive numbers scoring 240 points last season while playing midget and high school hockey. This year he made the jump to junior hockey skating for the Springfield Blues of the NAHL.
"Troy is a very talented player," said Islanders scout Jay Heinbuck. "He has very good puck and stick skills. Troy has a good scoring touch and excellent hockey instincts. We're glad to get Troy with our final pick."
From Illinois, not sure if anyone in the OHL has his rights...
