“WILDCATS CLAIM SIXTEEN PLAYERS IN 2006 QMJHL DRAFT”
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 10th, 2006
Charlottetown, PE – Moncton Wildcats made 16 selections through 15 Rounds at the 2006 QMJHL Midget Entry Draft, held at the Charlottetown Civic Center on Saturday. In all, Moncton chose eight players from the Atlantic Region, four from Quebec and three from New England.
Moncton selected Randy Cameron with their first pick of the draft, 40th overall, in the third round. Cameron is a native of Prince Edward Island and played last season with the Summerside Western Capitals on the Maritime Junior A League. In describing Cameron, Moncton Wildcats Head Scout Peter Nevin commented that he is a good all around forward who could have probably made the line up last season. “He is a great two-way player who has great offensive skills and because he played Junior A as a 16 year old, we feel he can step into next season’s starting lineup.” Wildcats actually had Cameron ranked 11th overall in the first round and were able to grab him early in the third round.
Moncton’s second pick, came in the fifth round, 90th overall, when they chose Alexi Pianosi from the Dartmouth Subways Midget AAA Team. Nevin commented, “Once again, we feel fortunate to be able to choose a player in the fifth round, who we actually had targeted for the first round, 12th overall. He is a very intelligent and skilled defenseman, who has a great future in Major Junior hockey and who has all the qualities to play professionally someday.”
Moncton’s third pick came in the sixth round, 104th overall, when they chose Matthew Brenton, who played Junior A with the Pictou County Weeks. In describing Brenton, Nevin compared him to former Wildcat Ian Girard. “We feel that he will be a late bloomer and put up solid offensive numbers, as he gains experience in Major Junior. He is a character player, with high energy. “
With Moncton’s fourth pick, 108th overall, in the sixth round, they went for size and toughness, as they chose 6’, 2”, 204 lbs. defenseman Remy Lamoureux from Amos of Quebec MAAA League. “In Lamoureux we feel that we have a physical defenseman with definite toughness qualities, that will develop in time. We are hopeful that Tim Spencer will be able to assist him in the early going, next season.”
In the seventh round, 112th overall, Moncton chose Matt Boyle, who was a team mate of Moncton’s Brad Smith last season with Charlottetown MAAA. Nevin describes Boyle as a free wheeling defenseman, with great skating skills.
Moncton’s next pick was also in the seventh round, when they chose highly touted forward Jimmy Hayes, 124th overall. He played last season Prep School in Massachusetts, with Nobles Greenough.
The other two Americans taken on Saturday were John Heffernan (14th Round, 244th overall) from Boston College High School and Tommy Cross (14th Round, 246th overall) from Simsbury High School in Connecticut. “After the outstanding season that Keith Yandle had and the tremendous development of forward Adam Pineault, we feel that more and more Americans will be looking to our program for development towards a professional career in the NHL.”
